The National Art Museum Presented an Updated Catalog «100 Masterpieces»
The National Art Museum presented the second, updated edition of the catalog «100 Masterpieces». The presentation took place as part of the event «September Night at the Art Museum». Like the first edition, which was released in 2014, the new catalog was supported by ITMS Belarus, the museum's general partner, writes the «Minsk-News» agency.
The idea of collecting one hundred of the most significant works from the museum's collection in a single book arose more than 12 years ago. Specialists had to choose only 100 works out of more than 30 thousand exhibits to represent different eras, art schools, and movements in the publication. The first catalog was highly sought after and completely sold out in about two years.
The new edition has three main sections. They are dedicated to Belarusian art of the 16th-20th centuries, Russian art of the 18th-20th centuries, as well as rare and unique examples of Western European and Eastern art. Each section includes an introductory article by museum specialists, and each work is accompanied by a brief description and an illustration. The catalog is published in Belarusian, Russian, and English.
The publication allows viewing not only works from the permanent exhibition but also a part of the museum's collection currently held in its storages. According to Nadezhda Vusava, a leading researcher at the museum, about 15-20 of the works presented in the catalog are not currently on display. In the future, some of them may appear in the updated exhibition of the museum's new building.
The second edition received a new design concept. The book uses black and white artistic photographs showcasing the architecture of the museum halls, Empire style elements, and the geometry of the museum space. Additionally, for a number of works, attribution data and other scientific information were clarified after new research.
Museum representatives noted that such catalogs allow visitors to continue their acquaintance with the museum's collection beyond the exhibition halls, revisit works already seen, and get acquainted with those not yet presented in the exhibition.
The publication «100 Masterpieces» is a continuation of the 25-year cooperation between the National Art Museum and ITMS Belarus. During this time, the company has supported a number of joint exhibition, publishing, and photo projects. The next joint project is expected to be the installation of a modern info-kiosk in the museum with a program guide and multimedia information for visitors.
The new edition of «100 Masterpieces» can be purchased at the souvenir shop of the National Art Museum in Minsk, at Karl Marx Street, 24. The catalog is intended for art enthusiasts, as well as art historians, researchers, and students.
