Five Belarusian handball players, who were previously announced for the American team "Los Angeles" to participate in the Club World Championship, will not go to the tournament in Egypt after all. This became known to Bet News publication.
Initially, it was reported that the American club's roster included three players from the Minsk Regional Handball Club (MAGC) Pavel Miskevich, Boris Pukhovsky, and Maksim Velichkevich, SKA Minsk player Yauhen Ladutska, as well as the current coach of women's SKA Dzmitry Kamyshyk.
However, due to problems with registration, none of the five Belarusian athletes will be able to participate in the upcoming tournament. Earlier reports about their participation in the "Los Angeles" squad were not confirmed.
The "Los Angeles" roster includes Russian line player Yan Viktorov, who is simultaneously a player and the club's manager. It was he who promised to invite Belarusian handball players to participate in the Super Globe.
The Club World Championship in handball will take place in Egypt from September 24 to October 1. Ten teams will participate in the tournament. Four of them, including "Los Angeles", were supposed to start the competition from the qualifying round. The American team is scheduled to meet Egyptian "Zamalek" on September 24 for the right to advance to the group stage.
The tournament group composition is as follows: Group A will feature "Barcelona" (Spain), "Montada" (Morocco), "Pinheiros" (Brazil) and the winner of the "Los Angeles" — "Zamalek" pair. Group B will play "Berlin" (Germany), "Al-Ahly" (Egypt), "Burgan" (Kuwait) and the winner of the "Sydney" (Australia) — "Veszprém" (Hungary) pair.
Teams that finish in the same positions in the groups will then meet in playoff matches for final standings. Clubs that lose in qualification will play two matches for ninth place.
