"The EU itself will make decisions on the EU." The European Commission commented on the US National Security Strategy.
Following yesterday's publication of the updated US National Security Strategy, the European Commission emphasized that it highly values transatlantic relations, but the European Union makes its own decisions concerning the European Union, "European Pravda" writes.

A European Commission spokesperson noted that the U.S. document correctly identifies priorities – ending Russia's war against Ukraine, as well as attention to events in the Western Hemisphere, which are important for the security of the U.S. itself. He emphasized that Europe is strategically and culturally significant for America, and transatlantic trade ties remain one of the foundations of the global economy.
The European Commission representative also recalled that in recent years the EU has been intensifying efforts to reduce dependence on the U.S. in the defense sphere, and will continue cooperation aimed at increasing Europe's competitiveness.
He emphasized that all issues concerning the European Union, including regulation, protection of freedom of speech and support for the international order based on rules, will be decided by the EU itself.
The U.S. strategy itself speaks of the need to restore strategic stability in relations with Russia, give Europe more responsibility for its own defense and restraint in matters of further NATO expansion.
The chief diplomat of the European Union, Kaja Kallas, previously noted that although there is some basis in some of the critical remarks from the United States, Europe must confidently defend its strength and position, including in relation to Russia.
