400 tons of sand and stands for 1800 people. Here's what they did on Niamiha
Minsk once again hosts an international beach volleyball tournament — the Victory Cup, featuring 12 men's and women's teams. Onliner visited the competition.
To organize such a tournament, a real stadium had to be built on Niamiha in just a few days. Naturally, there's no beach here, so for the sake of volleyball, about 400 tons of quartz sand from near Homiel were brought to the center of Minsk. The stands can accommodate 1800 spectators simultaneously.
However, there's nothing unusual about this format. For several years now, organizers of major tournaments have been moving away from holding competitions directly on beaches and often set up courts in iconic locations. For example, beach volleyball was played near the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and on Palace Square in St. Petersburg.
The best result among Belarusian athletes was shown by Viktoria Sakretava and Nadezhda Tishkova: the girls reached the final, defeating Russian athletes Kristina Filimonova and Katerina Shevtsova, who represent Moscow's 'Dynamo', in the semi-finals.
For victory in the tournament, our athletes will compete against Maria Yegorova and Maria Lazurenko from Kaliningrad's 'Lokomotiv'.
As for the men, the duo of Alexander Dyadkov and Pavel Petrushka will compete for third place against Russians Vyacheslav Krasilnikov and Vladislav Reinson from 'Dynamo'.
Third-place matches will start on Saturday at 16:00, finals from 18:00. Tickets can be purchased at online box offices.
