But customers are queuing up.

The Austrian bakery chain Martin Auer opened its first store outside the country — in New York — and is selling a one-and-a-half-kilogram loaf of rye bread for $60 there. The store, Rye by Martin Auer, operates in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan, writes Bild.

The bread is made from organic Austrian grain with a sourdough starter, and the dough is fermented for up to 24 hours.

The store's assortment focuses primarily on this product: it is sold whole, in halves, in quarters, and used for sandwiches.

In Austria, a similar loaf costs less than 10 euros.

In New York, the price caused controversy, yet queues still form outside the store. The SoHo store became the 43rd for the Martin Auer chain and its first international one.

The company explains the high price by the expensive location and the labor-intensive production of the bread.
