According to the American official, US President Donald Trump believes he can convince Russia to agree to security guarantees for Ukraine, similar to those provided by Article 5. He noted that certain progress had been made in this direction in Berlin, but emphasized: such guarantees will not be discussed indefinitely.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also stated that EU countries and the USA have agreed to provide Ukraine with security guarantees similar to NATO's Article 5:
"This is truly a far-reaching, substantive agreement that we did not have before: both Europeans and Americans are jointly ready to provide Ukraine with security guarantees. President Zelenskyy referred to Article 5 of the NATO treaty – meaning we are talking about similar security guarantees for Ukraine."
The American official also stated that after the latest meetings, there is a gradual reduction in disagreements between Moscow and Kyiv, and discussions on territorial issues have become more in-depth.
The White House representative also reported that Russia may allegedly adopt an open position regarding Ukraine's entry into the European Union.
In addition, he stressed that Donald Trump was satisfied with the results of the negotiations between the US and Ukrainian delegations in Berlin. According to the source's assessment, the meetings were "really positive," and understanding was reached on a number of issues.
At the same time, it was noted that some topics still require further discussion. The official also added that European representatives showed themselves very well and expressed hope that the parties will be able to get closer to a peaceful settlement.
Negotiations between the US and Ukraine took place on December 14-15 in Berlin and lasted about five hours. The meeting was attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Whitkoff, and the American leader's son-in-law, Jared Kushner. A 20-point peace plan was discussed.
