As Radio Svaboda learned, this elderly man, like other Ukrainians forcibly taken to Belarus during the Russian occupation of Borodianka near Kyiv, was held in a local church, at that time subordinate to the Moscow Patriarchate.

Afterward, the Ukrainian man was brought to Gomel region, and in May 2022, he was taken to the village of Kholmech in Rechytsa district and placed in the local territorial center for social services. He lived in the department for continuous stay of elderly citizens and disabled persons, and died on September 9, 2025, at the age of 86. The Ukrainian was buried in the local cemetery.

A court in Ukraine has now recognized him as deceased.

On February 24, 2022, Russian troops invaded Chernihiv and Kyiv regions of Ukraine from the territory of Belarus.

In late March, after the liberation of these regions from Russian troops, it became known that before retreating, the Russians forcibly took civilians to Belarus, and then to Russia. Most of them ended up in Russian captivity, others were left in Belarus.

Ukrainian law enforcement agencies have opened 11,433 criminal cases against Russian servicemen for war crimes, as well as cases against Ukrainian collaborators.

Bucha, Borodianka, and Irpin in Kyiv region have become symbols of the brutality of Russian servicemen against the civilian population.

Previously, it became known about the death of a displaced Ukrainian citizen in an elderly care home in Vetka, Gomel region, three months after her forced deportation by Russian troops from Kyiv region to Belarus.

In December 2023, it became known about the death in Belarus of 15-year-old Arina Yatsiuk, wounded by Russian soldiers in March 2022 near Kyiv while attempting to evacuate. Her body was found in the morgue in Mozyr. All this time, relatives searched for her in several countries, including Belarus. The girl was identified by DNA after her body was transferred to Ukraine as part of an exchange.
