In Kupyansk, the entire group of Russians who had been holed up in a bombed hospital for several months was destroyed. No one got out.

Russian units, deployed north of Kupyansk in the triangle of Kondrashovka — Redkivka — Golubovka, penetrated the city in October 2025 from two main directions. The first — along highway R-79, which runs parallel to the Oskil River. The second — bypassing through the western part of the city, crossing the Kupyanka River.
Russians announced the capture of Kupyansk on November 20, 2025 — preemptively, as their generals often do to receive a bonus and an order. However, assault detachments of Russian special forces found themselves encircled as a result of Ukrainian counterattacks. The Russians entrenched themselves in a number of buildings. The largest group occupied the capital complex of the Central District Hospital. They were supplied with ammunition and food using cargo drones.

"I understand, brother, that we are in a cauldron, in deep shit," the "Pioneer Zapasu" channel quoted a Russian soldier.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Kupyansk on December 12. He thereby effectively mocked Vladimir Putin and Valery Gerasimov, who reported on the city's capture on camera.
The Ukrainians were in no hurry to storm the Russian enclaves in the city, conserving their strength. The exhaustion of the defense was a matter of time, and that time has come.

“Under the informational cover (silence) of the Russian Ministry of Defense — the Armed Forces of Ukraine are clearing the remaining northern section,” Russian war correspondents wrote today, adding: “The guys from the CRH died. All of them.”

Around 58,000 people lived in the Kupyansk agglomeration before the war. This is comparable to Belarusian Kobryn. Russians occupied Kupyansk (correct stress is on the first syllable) on February 27, 2022, but the AFU liberated it during the Izyum counter-offensive operation in September of the same year. After that, the front line solidified east and north of Kupyansk.
