In Kyiv, a man started shooting and took hostages in a supermarket
In Kyiv's Holosiivskyi district, an unknown man opened fire on people near the «Velmart» supermarket. According to preliminary police information, at least one person died, and there are also injured.
The identity of the shooter has not yet been established. He appears to be a man in his 60s, armed with an automatic weapon — he approached random people on the street and shot them at close range.
It is known that one person died, and at least four were injured.
After the shooting, the assailant took visitors of the «Velmart» supermarket hostage.
The area around the supermarket has been cordoned off, and special services are working on site.
The assailant's motives are currently unknown, and the situation remains tense.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that among the injured on the street is a child. Medics are transporting him to the hospital. Injured adults are being examined and treated on site. According to the mayor, as a result of the shooting, there are injured and several dead.
«The special operation to apprehend the man who committed the shooting and is currently inside the supermarket continues. According to preliminary information, gunshots are also heard inside the supermarket», — Klitschko wrote.
Later, Klitschko provided updated figures for the casualties — two dead and five injured. Among the injured is a supermarket security guard, where the shooter is hiding.
It is reported that armored vehicles have arrived at the supermarket and special forces are preparing for an assault. However, negotiations with the shooter are ongoing. Ukraine's Minister of Internal Affairs, Ihor Klymenko, arrived at the scene.
Holosiivskyi Avenue, where the events are unfolding, is blocked, and the scene is cordoned off.
