The US Navy is discussing the possibility of renaming an aircraft carrier, currently being built under the provisional name USS Doris Miller, in honor of President Donald Trump. This is reported by CNN and NBC News , citing informed sources.
If such a decision is made, it will be unprecedented: previously, no American aircraft carrier was named after a sitting president.
Initially, the Ford-class aircraft carrier was decided to be named after Doris "Dorie" Miller — a Black US Navy sailor who became famous during Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. The Navy announced this in January 2020, during Trump's first presidential term. According to CNN, the question of renaming the ship has been discussed since early 2026.
At the same time, the Navy is considering naming another warship after Miller. He was also nominated for the Medal of Honor — the highest military award in the US. Thomas Bledsoe, Miller's great-nephew, stated that the family had not been informed of the change in plans.
According to CNN, the Navy itself has already virtually stopped referring to the ship as USS Doris Miller and uses its hull number CVN-81. In a recent White House executive order on the development of naval shipbuilding, it was also mentioned only as CVN-81.
The Navy needs to decide on the name before the keel-laying ceremony, which is expected at the end of this year. The transfer of the aircraft carrier to the fleet, according to USNI News, will not happen before 2034.
The right to name warships belongs to the Secretary of the Navy, however, the Secretary of Defense usually also actively participates in selecting names for aircraft carriers. Therefore, the final decision will be made by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Acting Secretary of the US Navy Hung Cao.
Doris Miller served in the Navy from 1939 and worked as a mess attendant. He had no special training in handling anti-aircraft weapons, but during the attack on Pearl Harbor, he took a position near a machine gun and opened fire on Japanese planes. After this, Miller helped evacuate the wounded.
In 1942, Admiral Chester Nimitz awarded him the Navy Cross. Approximately a year later, Miller died in the Battle of Makin after a Japanese torpedo struck his ship.
