It became known whose remains Belarusian tourists found in the mountains of Kazakhstan

It was previously reported that Belarusian climbers found human remains in the mountains of Kazakhstan. They likely belong to a man who went missing as far back as 19 years ago.

On August 16, a group of Belarusian climbers completed a two-week ascent in the Talgar district of Almaty region, Kazakhstan. During the descent, at an altitude of about 3400 meters, where a previously inaccessible section was revealed after the glacier melted, the tourists found human remains and personal belongings. They reported the find to rescuers and published photos online.

These images were seen by 44-year-old Nelly Mikheeva. She contacted rescuers and reported that the found items might belong to her father. During the on-site inspection, a passport in the name of Sergei Mikheev was indeed found. At the time of his disappearance, the man was 49 years old.

Sergei Mikheev stopped making contact in 2007 during a mountain hike. Since then, his fate remained unknown. Rescuers have now organized the evacuation of the remains from the mountains. However, the identity of the deceased has not yet been officially confirmed. DNA expertise must definitively establish it, and only then can the body be handed over to the family.

The daughter said that her father loved mountain tourism very much. However, after a difficult spinal surgery, he was granted disability status and forbidden to lift more than five kilograms. It seemed that this should have put an end to his passion for the mountains.

But Mikheev did not give up his hobby. He began to train regularly, quit smoking, and gradually regained his physical form. After some time, his disability was lifted. After his recovery, the man first of all went back to the mountains. It was during one of these hikes in 2007 that he disappeared without a trace.

Now, 19 years later, a chance find by Belarusian tourists may help the family finally learn what happened to Sergei Mikheev.
