If packaging bags in a store are free, can you take them in any quantity? Lawyer explains
Lawyer Darya Khatkevich explained to the "Minskaya Prauda" publication that free bags in supermarkets are intended only for packaging goods. Their distribution is regulated by law, and this does not mean that a person can take them without restrictions.

According to trade rules, stores are obliged to package some goods for free — for example, weighed products, sliced bread, or products of their own production. At the same time, the store itself determines in which specific packaging to provide the goods — this can be a bag, paper, or plastic container.
If a person takes an excessive quantity of bags — for example, several rolls or a large supply for household needs — this can be regarded as petty theft.
If the amount of damage is small and does not exceed ten basic units, administrative responsibility may ensue. It provides for a fine of up to 30 basic units, community service, or administrative arrest. Currently, one basic unit is 45 rubles, so the maximum fine can reach 1350 rubles.
If the amount exceeds 10 basic units, the case may transition into the criminal realm as theft. In such a case, punishment of up to three years of imprisonment is possible.
Separately, the lawyer noted that if store employees or security notice a person trying to flee with goods, their actions could be qualified as robbery, which carries an even more serious penalty — up to four years in prison.
Responsibility for petty theft in Belarus begins at 14 years of age.
