The first vessel to be escorted by American ships was a Greek tanker carrying about two million barrels of crude oil. The vessel had been in the Persian Gulf for a long time and is now heading to India.
In essence, this is a resumption of "Operation Project Freedom," which the US launched on May 4 to ensure the safe passage of ships through the strait. It was quickly halted then due to dissatisfaction from Saudi Arabia.
Now, the American fleet plans to escort about ten vessels in the coming days, including oil tankers and container ships.
