The "Financial Times" reported this week that American officials are holding talks about the deployment of nuclear warheads and bombers in countries on NATO's eastern flank. American nuclear weapons are currently stored at military facilities in Germany, Belgium, Italy, Turkey, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
According to information from the Financial Times, the US is considering a scenario involving the deployment of nuclear weapons in those European NATO countries that have not yet been involved in this program.
This step is intended to convince allies that a reduction in conventional military support from Washington will not weaken their security. As reported by three sources of the newspaper, it is about the deployment of American aircraft capable of carrying nuclear warheads. "Lithuania, of course, is not standing aside," said Kaunas.
To make such a deployment possible, Vilnius has expressed readiness to revise its own Constitution, which currently prohibits the presence of weapons of mass destruction within the country. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has already allowed amendments to the Basic Law, citing security concerns in the region.
