A simple action when sitting for a long time reduces cancer mortality: new findings from scientists
We all know that sitting for too long is bad for our health. But a new large-scale study shows: when it comes to oncology, the total time spent in a chair is not the main factor.

Scientists from the University of Glasgow analyzed data from more than 91,000 participants from the UK Biobank medical database, whose health was monitored for an average of about 12 years.
Unlike previous studies where people self-reported their habits, here physical activity was measured as objectively as possible: each volunteer wore a special tracker on their wrist for a whole week, which recorded any movements around the clock. A computer program precisely divided the participants' time into continuous sitting (from 30 minutes without movement) and intermittent sitting, where the person stood up from time to time.
The results, published in the journal PLOS Medicine, showed a clear pattern: each additional hour of continuous sitting per day increases the risk of death from cancer by 9-10%. Conversely, if a person spends time sitting but frequently takes breaks for movement, each additional hour of such "intermittent" sitting is associated with an 18-19% reduction in the risk of death from oncology.
Scientists suggest that long periods of immobility contribute to chronic inflammation and impair blood sugar and insulin regulation (which is linked to tumor development), while even short bursts of activity interrupt these harmful processes.
Researchers also calculated what would happen if part of the sedentary time were replaced with activity. It was found that replacing just one hour of prolonged sitting with light activity — for example, kitchen work or even folding laundry — reduces the risk of death from cancer by 12%. Half an hour of moderate activity (brisk walking) yields an 8% reduction in risk, and replacing just 5 minutes of sitting with intense exercise, such as running, reduces it by as much as 22%.
This means that significant health benefits can be gained even without going to the gym.
It is important to note that a person's weight and body mass index did not affect these statistics. This indicates that taking breaks is beneficial for absolutely everyone, regardless of whether you are overweight or slim and athletic.
The main conclusion for millions of people who spend their days at office desks, in cars, or on sofas: to protect your health, it is not necessary to completely give up the chair; it is enough simply not to be "glued" to it and to regularly get up for at least a few minutes and stretch for at least a couple of minutes.
