Tatsiana Niadbai, Chairperson of Belarusian PEN, shared on her Facebook page condolences from the Katyn Museum, where Sviatlana Kurs worked.
«It may seem unbelievable, but infinitely kind people do exist. These are people who never complain, never speak ill of others, never lament their difficult fate, are always ready to help, don't boast about their successes, and sincerely rejoice in the achievements of others. Sometimes they cross our path and make the world seem a better place.
For the past few years, our small team had precisely such a person among us. This was Sviatlana Kurs — an outstanding Belarusian writer, journalist, public figure, and for us — a colleague from the next desk.
For over a year, Sviatlana was seriously ill, but even during her illness, she didn't complain. She believed — and we, along with her, did too — that she would return to her started but unfinished work. To descend into the exhibition, to tell about the victims of Kuropaty. Sviatlana, like no one else, knew how to work with archival documents — not only thanks to her perfect command of Polish, Belarusian, and Russian languages and a deep understanding of the historical context, but also because she was able to read human emotions with great empathy.
She spoke about the victims of the Katyn crime, whom she knew from documents, in beautiful Polish with a borderland accent — the kind spoken by many victims and their relatives.
We mourn along with Sviatlana's relatives and friends, especially with her son Feliks.
She left us, leaving a great void. But we believe that her spirit will remain with us for a long time,» wrote the museum, which is dedicated to the memory of the victims of Katyn.
