According to him, the cancellation of elections should block the path for the opposition. "There will be no more elections here where they could try to seize the government and power," said Daniel Ortega.
Daniel Ortega stated that elections will no longer be held in the country, Reuters reports.
Ortega served as president from 1979 to 1990. In 2007, he was re-elected head of state and has not left the position since. According to him, the cancellation of elections should block the path for the opposition.
"There will be no more elections here where they could try to seize the government and power. The times when parties supported by Yankees and self-proclaimed (revolutionaries) could return to power are over – and will never happen again," he said.
Last year, Ortega further consolidated his power through a series of constitutional reforms. Among them were the appointment of his wife Rosario Murillo as "co-president" and the extension of the presidential term to six years.
Thus, Ortega and his wife control almost all spheres of state administration, including the army and the judiciary.
The last elections in the country took place in 2021. At that time, almost 40 opposition politicians, including seven potential presidential candidates, were imprisoned on unsubstantiated grounds.
