Ilham Aliyev spoke about a secret Russian-German meeting in Baku
President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, during a press conference with German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz, confirmed that on July 12-14, an unofficial meeting of former high-ranking representatives of Germany and Russia, dedicated to possible ways to end the war in Ukraine, allegedly took place in Baku without the knowledge of official authorities.
According to Aliyev, the Azerbaijani side did not participate in the negotiations, but flight data confirm the fact of the meeting. The President of Azerbaijan noted that Baku could only welcome such contacts if their goal was to facilitate an end to the war:
"I cannot comment on the details, as we were not present at the meeting. However, flight data allows me to state that a secret meeting in Baku indeed took place. If this meeting was intended to help end the war between Russia and Ukraine, we can only welcome it."
According to the Azerbaijani border service, on July 12, former Brandenburg Prime Minister Matthias Platzeck and former head of the German Chancellery Ronald Pofalla arrived in the country.
Soon after them, people close to Vladimir Putin arrived in Azerbaijan — former Chairman of the Government of Russia Viktor Zubkov and Chairman of the Presidential Council for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights Valery Fadeyev.
German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that his government did not participate in the meeting and was unaware of it.
