Jeans that look like they've been forgotten to be fastened have become a new fashion trend among American youth. Such models are now sold by both mass-market and well-known designer brands. Some consider them a bold continuation of 2000s aesthetics, while others joke that the owner simply forgot to button up their pants.

Fashion always has trends that surprise the older generation. In the 2000s, it was low-rise jeans, so low that underwear was visible. Then came the fashion for skinny (very tight) and intentionally ripped jeans, followed by excessively wide pants. Now it's the turn of jeans that look unzipped.
As reported by The New York Times, the new style is called foldover jeans — literally "jeans with a folded-down waistband."
The upper part of such jeans is folded over and sewn to the main fabric. Beneath it, an insert in stripes, plaid, or small flowers, reminiscent of underwear, is often visible.

As a result, it creates the illusion that the fly is unzipped and the pants are about to fall down. However, some models don't even have a real zipper: the desired effect is created by one or two unbuttoned buttons and a folded-down waistband.

The new style was spurred by the trend of unbuttoning regular jeans and folding down their waistband to expose the stomach and make the rise even lower. In 2022, American singer Doja Cat and pop star Addison Rae, who gained fame thanks to TikTok, appeared in public this way.
British actress Millie Bobby Brown, known for the series "Stranger Things", published a photo of herself in unzipped jeans on her Instagram in 2022.
Gradually, clothing manufacturers turned this technique into a distinct style. Now, such jeans are produced by both affordable clothing chains and luxury brands.
The new style has already become the subject of jokes on social media. Users write that a person in such jeans looks like they forgot to button up their pants after visiting the restroom. Nevertheless, demand for the model remains high, and store owners note that popular sizes sell out quickly.

Fashion reviewers note that foldover jeans are yet another testament to the return of early 2000s aesthetics. In recent years, low-rise, exposed midriffs, wide-leg jeans, and visible underwear waistbands have all come back into fashion. Jeans with an "unzipped" fly have become the next step in this direction.
