Russia has already started discussions with "Alternative for Germany" about the possibility of resuming Russian gas supplies

However, the meeting will only take place if Russia and Ukraine first agree on a framework peace deal. The organizers also expect the participation of US representatives, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Possible meeting locations include Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and India.

However, a senior American official told Reuters that Witkoff and Kushner were unaware of such a meeting and had not received an invitation.

Alice Weidel had previously stated to German media that, should the AfD come to power, the party would want to resume imports of cheap Russian energy resources. Before the war, Germany was Gazprom's largest foreign market: Russian gas provided more than half of Germany's gas imports.

The topic of resuming Russian supplies to Germany had already been raised within the administration of US President Donald Trump. The possibility of reactivating the Nord Stream pipelines through their acquisition by American companies was considered.

However, the return of Russian gas faces serious obstacles. According to analysts at "Vector Capital," the operation and use of the Nord Stream pipelines are limited by EU and German regulations. Changing these rules would require the consent of all 27 European Union countries.

Furthermore, the EU has already approved a plan to completely cease purchases of Russian gas by October 2027. Of the four Nord Stream lines, three were blown up in September 2022. The fourth, belonging to Nord Stream 2, remained, but this pipeline never received certification in Germany.

Another problem is the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline, through which Russian gas previously flowed, including to the eastern regions of Germany. It passes through Poland, which, as noted in the article, is completely uninterested in resuming its operation.

Michael Kellner, a Member of Parliament from the German Green Party, who was responsible for energy policy in the government during the 2022 energy crisis, stated that Germany should not return to its former dependence on Russia. According to him, the energy crisis cost the country 50 billion euros.

The AfD has so far only won elections in one federal state — Saxony-Anhalt. In the upcoming elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the party could also gain the most support. However, a decision on resuming Russian gas supplies cannot be made at the level of an individual state.

The next federal elections for the Bundestag are scheduled to take place in Germany in 2029.
