The European Commission announced on Thursday its decisions to fine Google 890 million euros for violations of the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

"Today, the European Commission adopted two decisions finding Google's non-compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) concerning giving preferential treatment to its own services in Google Search, as well as imposing restrictions on companies redirecting consumers to alternative, often cheaper, purchasing channels in Google Play," the EC statement said.

It notes that the European Commission imposed fines on Google of 460 million euros and 430 million euros, respectively, for these violations.

"The two decisions we took today confirm our readiness to apply the Digital Markets Act to protect business and innovation. We found that Google harms companies offering similar services, for example in shopping or sports, by not providing them the same level of visibility in Google Search. We also found that Google restricted app developers from offering customers cheaper deals in the Google Play app store. Google must now stop this non-compliance and refrain from continuing it in the future," stated Hena Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President of the EC, responsible for EU's technological sovereignty.

In turn, her colleague — Executive Vice-President of the EC, overseeing competitiveness issues, Teresa Ribera — noted that Google failed to effectively comply with the requirements of the Digital Markets Act, and therefore "decisive but balanced measures" were taken to ensure compliance with the law in connection with these violations.
