A year later, on August 25, 1991, it was given the status of a constitutional act, and Belarus became independent.
On July 27, 1990, the Supreme Soviet of the BSSR adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty by an absolute majority of votes, almost unanimously. Belarusians followed the example of other republics of the empire, primarily Ukrainians, who adopted their declaration on July 16.
The Declaration did not change the real status of the country as part of the USSR but created the basis for the declaration of independence in 1991. Then, in August, the parliament granted the 1990 Declaration the status of a constitutional act.
In many other European countries, the dates of adoption of such acts became national holidays, Independence Days.
In Belarus, July 27 was a national holiday, a day off from 1991 to 1996, until Alexander Lukashenka replaced it with a date from Soviet history — July 3.
In the 1990s and early 2000s, the date continued to be celebrated with demonstrations in the capital until the authorities restricted freedom of assembly.
