Former political prisoner Asia Bulybenka organizes an exhibition of paintings created after an abortion

"Only later did I realize that I was drawing her — my little one, as I called her," shares Asia in an interview with Most. Due to the ban on abortions in Poland, where the girl currently lives, she decided to travel to Lithuania.

An exhibition of paintings by former political prisoner Asia Bulybenka, who was convicted in the "students' case," will be held in Warsaw. Through art, the girl processes her difficult experience.

The Sununfollowers exhibition consists of a series of paintings with sunflowers that Asia created over several weeks after terminating her pregnancy. She took this step while in an abusive relationship with her former boyfriend.

Asia became pregnant a year ago. Due to the ban on abortions in Poland, where the girl currently lives, she traveled to Lithuania.

Asia painted her first sunflower a month after the abortion. Soon after, the girl was admitted to a psychiatric clinic in Lithuania with diagnoses of depression, anorexia, and PTSD — post-traumatic stress disorder.

There, she painted several more works, including one where the sunflower is depicted inside her.

"Only later did I realize that I was drawing her — my little one, as I called her," the artist shares in an interview with Most. "Biologically, it was just an embryo. I tried to convince myself of that in my head and instill it to calm down. But psychologically, I had time to get attached because the term was not one week, not two, and not three. There was no funeral. For me, this is grief."

Through the exhibition, Asia wants to raise the issue of abortion restrictions in Poland and show the personal struggles women can face in similar situations.

Within the framework of the exhibition, donations will be collected, a portion of which Asia intends to officially transfer to the Aborcyjny Dream Team organization, which defends women's reproductive rights and fights for the decriminalization of abortions in Poland.
