A Hasid who came from Israel to Uman for the celebration of the Jewish New Year was mobilized in Ukraine
A 49-year-old Hasid, who was returning to Israel after celebrating the Jewish New Year Rosh Hashanah in Uman, was detained in Ukraine. The Israeli publication The Jerusalem Post reported that the man was allegedly mobilized into the Ukrainian army. However, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine stated that it was not an Israeli citizen, but a person who also holds Ukrainian citizenship, writes the BBC Ukrainian service.
According to border guards, during a document check, it was revealed that the man, who showed an Israeli passport, is also a citizen of Ukraine. In addition, military registration databases contained information that he was wanted. Therefore, border guards handed him over to the National Police for further investigation.
The Border Guard Service emphasized that foreigners are not checked for military registration when crossing the Ukrainian border. Moreover, border guards do not carry out mobilization directly at checkpoints.
According to The Jerusalem Post, the man's name is Yonatan Karlinsky Mashak. He was born in Ukraine, moved to Israel about 14 years ago, and now lives in Jerusalem. He is reported to be raising six children. His friend, who was traveling with him on the same bus, said that Mashak had an Israeli passport where the place of birth was indicated as the Soviet Union.
According to the friend, border guards noticed that the man spoke Ukrainian, after which they decided to check his data. He was removed from the bus, which belonged to the company Derech Tzadikim. After that, his relatives and acquaintances could not contact him for a long time.
Later, Mashak managed to send an email, in which he recounted what had happened to him. He also tried to call his wife twice, but when she called back, she only heard an automatic message in Ukrainian.
Mashak's friend, Natan, claimed that the man was allegedly taken to Odesa for conscription into the Ukrainian army. The Jerusalem Post also reported that the man might have been mobilized, but Ukrainian border guards officially confirmed only the fact of his detention and transfer to the police. The National Police and the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine had not yet provided detailed explanations to the BBC Ukrainian service at the time of publication.
Ukrainian authorities had previously explained that during martial law, men aged 25 to 60, including Ukrainian citizens holding passports of other states, are subject to mobilization. However, a father of three minor children has the right to a deferment from mobilization according to the law.
The material also notes that there have already been cases where Ukrainian citizens who lived abroad for a long time came to the country, and when trying to leave, faced problems at the border and could subsequently be mobilized.
Every year, thousands of Hasidim come to Uman for Rosh Hashanah to pray at the grave of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov — the founder of Breslov Hasidism. After the start of the full-scale war, Ukrainian and Israeli authorities have repeatedly urged pilgrims to refrain from traveling to Ukraine, but they usually do not heed such warnings.
