Serbian President Vučić Plans to Move to Prime Minister's Chair Instead of Full Resignation

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić will lead the list of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party in the upcoming parliamentary elections and will be nominated as a candidate for the post of prime minister. The party announced this itself.

The head of the parliamentary faction of the Serbian Progressive Party, Milenko Jovanović, stated that Vučić and his policies are the "foundation" on which Serbia stands today. He also criticized the anti-government protests, stating that they are allegedly organized by small and unstructured political groups, which, if they came to power, could turn the country into a "concentration camp".

In July, Vučić himself expressed confidence in an interview with the Austrian publication Die Presse that his party would win the elections, which are scheduled to take place in October. He stated that after the elections, Serbia would become economically stronger, and the elections themselves, according to his assessment, would be more democratic than in many other countries.

For about two years now, mass anti-government protests have been periodically taking place in Serbia. The main driving force behind these actions has been the youth. Amidst the protests, Vučić has repeatedly stated that he might prematurely leave the presidential office, not waiting for the end of his current term in mid-2027.

According to the Constitution, Serbia is a parliamentary republic. In such a system, the president primarily has representative and ceremonial functions, while the main executive power is concentrated in the hands of the government and the prime minister. Therefore, Vučić's transition from the presidency to the head of government will allow him to maintain decisive influence over state policy.
