After the last major pardon, 224 more people recognized as political prisoners
Human rights defenders also recognized 138 more people as political prisoners ex post facto, reported Viasna.
On March 19, 250 political prisoners were released as a result of a pardon. Since then, human rights defenders have recognized 224 more people as political prisoners, who are being held behind bars for political reasons.
In addition, during the same period, human rights defenders ex post facto recognized 138 more people as political prisoners — at the time of recognition, they had already been released.
Thus, after the release of 250 political prisoners on March 19, human rights defenders recorded and recognized the politically motivated imprisonment of 362 more people.
Today Lukashenka at a meeting with John Cowell stated that it's allegedly a fake that Belarus imprisons twice as many political prisoners as it releases.
«Our fugitives are promoting this topic in the West, and I feel, according to my information, they have convinced you that we are releasing someone here, but, continuing repressions, we are detaining twice as many people in their place. I want to publicly tell you that this is an absolute lie,» — Lukashenka stated.
