Venice plans to charge 30 euros for the right to a one-day visit. The current fee doesn't deter anyone

Venice authorities are considering increasing the fee for tourists who visit the city for only one day. Currently, it ranges from 5 to 10 euros, but in the future, the maximum amount could rise to 30 euros. The final parameters of the fee for 2027 in Venice still need to be agreed upon with the Italian government, Reuters reports .

According to Michele Zorin, the city administration's advisor for budget and taxes, the current fee is practically accessible to all visitors and therefore no longer serves to deter tourist flow. As a result, authorities even discussed raising the fee to 50 euros, but may ultimately limit it to a maximum rate of 30 euros.

The goal of the proposed measure is to reduce the number of tourists visiting Venice for one day during the busiest periods.

Venice introduced a fee for one-day visits to the city in 2024. In 2026, it was 5 euros if paid in advance and 10 euros if the ticket was purchased shortly before the visit.

The fee increase is being discussed amid rising tourist pressure on Italy. In 2023, approximately 65 million foreign tourists visited the country, which corresponded to pre-coronavirus pandemic levels.

Earlier, in August 2024, the Italian government proposed increasing the maximum tourist accommodation tax to 25 euros per night. Its amount was proposed to be tied to the room price: from 5 euros for accommodation cheaper than 100 euros to 25 euros for rooms more expensive than 750 euros.

By then, Italy's most popular tourist destinations had already been allowed to increase the accommodation tax to 10 euros per night. Total revenues from tourist taxes in the country rose to 775 million euros.
