Putin moved the Valdai Club from Sochi to the Moscow Region due to the threat of Ukrainian attacks
Putin has not been to Sochi since October last year.
Participants of the annual meeting of the Valdai Club learned about the change of conference venue in August, according to Financial Times sources. They initially received invitations to Sochi — the club's meeting traditionally took place there as recently as 2025.
According to two FT interlocutors, the decision to relocate was made at the insistence of the presidential security service. The publication notes that Putin has not been to Sochi since last October (precisely when the previous Valdai meeting took place), and in the last two years, he has only visited twice a year. In contrast, in 2021, he visited Sochi 24 times.
The last-minute relocation of the annual meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club became "further evidence of the growing threat" posed by Ukraine's long-range strikes.
The event's website states that the XXIII annual meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club will be held from September 28 to October 1 in the Moscow Region.
