Volodymyr Zelenskyy's publication of a video from Kupyansk caused a wave of controversy and clumsy attempts at refutation by Russian resources. The matter was settled by two Ukrainian women who published their own video from the same location.
On December 12, the President of Ukraine published a selfie video in front of the Kupyansk entrance stela. It was shot on an iPhone 17 Pro, which went on sale a few months ago. Zelenskyy announced his visit to the advanced command post of the 14th Separate Mechanized Brigade. According to OSINT researchers, the filming location was in close proximity to the front: approximately 1.15 km from Russian positions and only 500 meters from the so-called "gray zone".
Immediately after the publication, Russian bloggers and media began to claim that the video was old and the visit was staged. They argued that the video was shot back in 2022, but did not pay attention to the new phone in the frame.
As main evidence, they cited footage from a Russian reconnaissance drone, allegedly taken the morning after the visit.
In these frames, the protective nets are torn, while in Zelenskyy's video, they appear almost intact. The stela itself also differs significantly, having much more damage in the new photos.
A few days later, a new video appeared online. Its authors are two girls who are likely involved with the Defense Forces (one of their military jackets is visible in the frame).
The girl off-screen clearly states the time:
"Zelenskyy was in Kupyansk yesterday, so Natalka and I are also going today."
In the footage taken by the girls, it is indeed visible that the stela looks different. Parts of the letters are missing, and the structure is heavily damaged by shrapnel. It is obvious that a massive strike was launched on it after Zelenskyy's departure. The protective net is also heavily damaged. Broken cars are also visible in the frame — the video's author clarifies that they belonged to Ukrainian defenders.
An important element that unites both stories was an enemy UAV. In Zelenskyy's video, a tangled drone is clearly visible in the still-intact protective net. The girls also focus on a similar drone hanging in the remnants of the already damaged net.
"And it's still charged," the girl comments, pointing to the threat.
The filming almost ended tragically. A few minutes after their arrival, the detector started beeping alarmingly — an active drone was approaching the girls.
Amid shouts of "It's buzzing! Something's flying! Let's go!" the girls rushed to flee. The last part of the video shows footage of a panicked evacuation accompanied by the detector's beeping and the driver's emotional language.
Judging by the fact that the video made it to the internet, the brave women managed to escape the pursuit.
