Speaking at the All-Belarusian People's Assembly, Alexander Lukashenka once again did not miss one of his favorite topics — the necessity of turning the consumer habits of Belarusians towards preferring domestic producers.

"For us, Belarusians, the choice of which product to buy — Belarusian or foreign — is a matter of national security. It must be. Many cannot overcome the stereotype of imported goods being elite.
But this is not a result of experience. This is a brainwashing tool that was quite successfully used even in Soviet society, especially in the late stage of its development.
We understand that both then and now, the quality of goods produced by Belarusians was and remains among the best in the world. But is that how we position ourselves in our own market?"
He showed his jacket and asked: "Well, what, is it impossible to wear Belarusian? Should I undress in the street? Is it disgusting to look at?"
And then he told how 30 years ago he went on a business trip to the USA and sat with some "scruffy," plainly dressed people who turned out to be billionaires. Dressing too well there is supposedly even indecent.
After that, Lukashenka lashed out at his own people, who live by different ideals:
"And we supposedly, you know, live in a poor country, and we still say something about Belarus — you say it! And our population: just look at the cars people drive, what they wear. The question arises: why are you spending enormous money to support foreign manufacturers? Well, support your own: "Kamvol," Orsha Linen, and so on. Good fabrics, our own fabrics, environmentally safe. Why are you doing this? This concerns everyone; you should think about it before blaming the authorities for all sins, including me."
Meanwhile, Lukashenka himself far from always appears in public wearing domestically produced clothing. For instance, in early October, for a working trip to the Petrykaŭ district, he chose Western-made clothing. Judging by the model, he was wearing a wool jacket from Harkila — a well-known Scandinavian brand.
