The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that heavy fighting continues in the area of Siversk, however, Ukrainian troops left the settlement «to preserve lives» and «combat capability of units». At the same time, Siversk remains under the fire control of the Ukrainian army.
According to the press service of the agency, during the battles for Siversk, the Ukrainian Defense Forces significantly exhausted the enemy — every meter of the city cost the occupiers a very high price. The invaders managed to advance due to a significant numerical superiority and constant pressure from small assault groups in difficult meteorological conditions.
Siversk was a key defense hub on the approaches to the «fortress belt» Druzhkivka — Kramatorsk — Sloviansk, right up to the borders of Donbas. The Chief of the General Staff of Russia, Valery Gerasimov, reported the capture of the city back on December 12.
