At a closed meeting with Congressional leadership, Marco Rubio stated that the Trump administration's goal is to buy Greenland from Denmark, not to conquer it.
According to The New York Times, Rubio told lawmakers that Trump instructed them to develop a new plan for acquiring the island.
The Secretary of State's statements came against the backdrop of increasingly belligerent rhetoric from the Trump administration. Prior to this, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, in a special statement, did not rule out the use of force for annexing Greenland.
"President Trump has made it clear that the acquisition of Greenland is a national security priority for the United States and vitally important for deterring our adversaries in the Arctic region.
The President and his team are discussing a number of options for achieving this important foreign policy goal, and, of course, the use of US armed forces always remains an option at the Commander-in-Chief's disposal," Leavitt noted.
Trump discussed buying Greenland already during his first term, but now he has become more insistent in his desire to make this territory part of the USA. NATO members stated that an American attack on Greenland — a self-governing island within Denmark — would effectively mean the end of the political-military alliance that had existed for decades.
