President of Bulgaria announced his resignation

Bulgarian President Rumen Radev announced during an address to the nation on January 19 that he is resigning.

During his speech, Rumen Radev noted that this was his "last address as president" of Bulgaria. He expressed his intention to resign as head of state on January 20, and also expressed confidence that Vice President Iliana Iotova would be a worthy acting president.

Rumen Radev has been President of Bulgaria since January 22, 2017, and was re-elected for a second term in 2021. Officially, his term of office was to end in January 2027.

Radev's resignation is linked to his intention to create his own political party after the government's resignation last month under the influence of mass protests, and to participate in new parliamentary elections at its head. According to the Bulgarian constitution, the prime minister holds the main executive powers, and the president's power is significantly limited.

Rumen Radev is among the Bulgarian politicians who hold a position favorable to Russia. He has repeatedly been noted for statements that can be considered pro-Russian.
