Trump said he could impose tariffs against countries that oppose his bid to acquire Greenland

US President Donald Trump stated on January 16 that he could use force, if necessary, to gain control over Greenland, and the introduction of tariffs is one of the possible options.

According to Trump, Greenland is of key importance for America's national security and Arctic security, where, in his opinion, the activity of Russia and China has intensified.

These statements came amidst a visit by a bipartisan US Congressional delegation to Copenhagen, which is trying to reduce tensions in relations with Denmark and Greenland. Earlier, the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland met in Washington with the US Vice President and Secretary of State, but failed to reach an understanding.

Denmark emphasizes that only it and Greenland should decide on matters concerning the territory, and this year increased its military presence on the island along with allies.

Greenland has had the right to autonomy within Denmark since 2009. It is rich in untapped mineral resources, making the territory attractive to American business. During Trump's first term, leading entrepreneurs, including Jeff Bezos, Michael Bloomberg, and Bill Gates, began investing in the island's development.
