Europe discusses deployment of NATO troops in Greenland — to make Trump rethink taking over the island

There are various options for how this operation could look.

Great Britain is in talks with European allies regarding the deployment of a military contingent in Greenland, The Telegraph reports.

Plans could include sending British soldiers, warships, and aircraft to defend Greenland from Russia and China. European countries hope that a significant increase in their presence in the Arctic will convince Donald Trump to abandon his ambitions to annex this strategic island.

Trump expressed concern that Moscow or Beijing would seize the island if he did not.

Sources in the government told the publication that Keir Starmer has taken the threat from Russia and China in the region "extremely seriously" and agreed that action needs to be taken.

Why is Greenland so important? It holds some of the world's largest deposits of rare earth elements. Plus, its strategic location between the US and Russia for missile defense. For the US, this would help counter China's growing influence in the Arctic. It is also home to Thule Air Base (Pituffik Space Base), the Pentagon's northernmost military outpost.

European countries hope to deter Trump from the idea of annexation by proposing to deploy a military contingent on the island. This idea was discussed at a meeting of NATO allies in Brussels on Thursday.

Sources told The Telegraph that the potential operation is in its early planning stages. It could be a full-scale troop deployment or a combination of limited-time exercises, intelligence sharing, capacity building, and reallocation of defense spending. Any operation would likely be conducted under the NATO flag and would be separate from existing missions in the Baltics and Poland.

The Telegraph also learned that the European Union is developing plans for sanctions against American companies should Trump reject the proposal for NATO force deployment. Tech giants such as Meta, Google, Microsoft, and X could face restrictions on their operations on the continent, as could American banks and financial firms. A more extreme option could be the expulsion of US military personnel from their bases in Europe, depriving the US of a key staging ground for operations in the Middle East and other regions.
