During her meeting with journalists in Berlin, former political prisoner Maria Kalesnikava, among other things, spoke about how her daily life is now organized in Germany, writes Deutsche Welle.

According to Kalesnikava, a small studio with a beautiful view of Berlin, furnished with art objects, belongs to Maria's friends. The former political prisoner is still looking for her own accommodation in Berlin. Kalesnikava says she will live in the capital of Germany, not in Stuttgart, where she lived before — after all, Berlin offers more opportunities.
According to Maria, bureaucratic issues in Germany have not yet been fully resolved. She is in Germany based on an invitation from the German government — Maria has already been issued a Reiseausweis (passport for foreigners) with a visa, which allows her to travel. But she clarified that she does not have refugee status.
"All other documents are in process, being made. The German side supports me greatly in this, I am very grateful to them. Issues with the bank are also being resolved (during Maria's imprisonment, her account in German Commerzbank was blocked. — Ed.)".
In Germany, Maria, according to her, feels safe: "I don't have security here, but I adhere to certain rules." Financially, she is currently primarily supported by her family; she does not receive assistance from the German government at this moment. "I have the opportunity to work and, of course, I will work."
Like other released Belarusian political prisoners, Maria received a payment from BySol.
After interviews with German media, Maria began to be frequently recognized on the streets of Berlin, primarily by non-Russian-speaking people.
"They approach and talk about supporting Belarus, saying they believe it will be free. I'm not very used to this, although, of course, it's pleasing that people recognize me and immediately talk about Belarus."
