Treasure of gold bars and coins worth 9 million euros found in a house wall in Belgium
Builders found the treasure in the basement wall under the house while laying pipes for the sewage system.
Workers renovating an old house in Belgium found a treasure in the basement wall beneath it – gold bars and coins, the total value of which could reach nine million euros, writes BBC.
“At first I thought they were 1 euro coins. But then I saw a gold bar nearby. And that's when we realized we had found something bigger,” said Kobi, an 18-year-old student and team member, to the Belgian broadcasting company VRT.
The builders called the police. Keeping the treasure for themselves, as they explained, would have been unthinkable.
“There are so many coins and bars – it would have been almost impossible,” foreman Mario told VRT. “And besides, it would just be theft.”
“Nine million euros – you can’t hide that much,” Kobi agreed.
All the bars are marked, but when they and the coins were made is not reported. There is also no information on when and how they were walled up.
According to the Belgian press, the house in the Dendermonde district of northern Belgium, where the treasure was found, belonged to a brewer-entrepreneur since the late 19th century. Currently, workers are completely rebuilding it for the needs of the CAW Oost-Vlaanderen organization, which bought it and provides social assistance in Dendermonde.
Gert Hillewert, director of CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, told journalists that he was very pleased with this impressive find and hoped that the funds would ultimately go to his charity and be used to help people.
However, as the Belgian press notes, it's not that simple.
Firstly, journalists write, the treasure must be divided equally between the workers who found it and the organization that owns the house.
Secondly, according to Belgian law, one must wait five years to see if the legal owner of the treasure appears.
And thirdly, the treasure will not go to any of them if it turns out that the hidden valuables were obtained through criminal means.
For now, local police have launched an investigation and urged people not to gather at the “golden” house, stating that it has already been turned upside down, and the treasure has been moved to a secure location.
