Money is charged only for using cubicles, while urinals are free. But they are only for men!
27-year-old Vienna resident Melanie Gradzik has sued the city authorities, accusing them of discrimination: women must pay for using public toilets, while men can use urinals for free, writes Daily Mail.
She explained that the idea to go to court arose after a regular trip to the park: «I was in the park with a friend, and both of us needed a toilet. He could go for free, but I had to pay 50 cents. I thought: how is this possible?»
«I want everyone to be able to use the toilet under equal conditions. Either we all pay 50 cents, or no one pays,» Gradzik stated, adding that it's not about the money: «This is a trifle, but it shows how women are treated unequally in everyday life.»
Vienna has 168 public toilets, 139 of which are free. According to the city authorities, the remaining 29 charge a fee because attendants work there.
«In heavily frequented areas, supervision is necessary to ensure proper use and cleanliness,» explained municipal spokeswoman Sandra Holtinger. According to her, in these 29 toilets, 50 cents are charged to people of any gender, and urinals are additionally installed «to prevent contamination from urinating in public places.»
