Nausėda: EU and US are taking different paths on sanctions against Belarus
After the US lifted some sanctions on Belarus, the Lithuanian president stated that the European Union is going down "a different path" regarding restrictive measures.
"The United States can indeed pursue its own policy regarding Russia and Belarus, however, EU policy is extremely clear and based on the principle that both states – both Russia and its close ally Belarus – are responsible for what is happening in Ukraine," stated the head of Lithuania to journalists in Brussels on Thursday.
"It should be noted that quite recently we managed to achieve an extension of EU sanctions against Belarus for another 12 months. During this period, there is neither the possibility nor the political will to revisit the sanctions. Thus, the lifting of US sanctions is one thing, while the EU's sanctions policy is a different path," said Nausėda.
He said this after Minsk, following negotiations with Washington, released 250 political prisoners, 15 of whom arrived in Lithuania.
