At a meeting of the UN Security Council, Ukraine's Permanent Representative Andriy Melnyk made a historical excursus, responding to Russian narratives about the alleged "unity of Ukrainians and Russians," Ukrinform reports.
The diplomat recalled that during the previous UN Security Council meeting on February 24, Russia's Permanent Representative Vasily Nebenzya "once again wasted time on the familiar nonsense about the alleged historical unity of Ukrainians and Russians."
"He even mumbled something about Kyivan Rus', which we, Ukrainians, allegedly sold for 30 pieces of silver," Melnyk recounted. "Allow me to put the historical facts in their proper place."
The Ukrainian diplomat noted that in the early 12th century, Kyiv was the capital of the largest and one of the most powerful states in medieval Europe.
"And the territory of modern Moscow at that time was just a swamp where frogs croaked," he observed.
Melnyk recalled the aggressive actions of Moscow's rulers in the past. It was under the leadership of Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky of the Vladimir-Suzdal land in 1169 that Kyiv was plundered, and many of its inhabitants were killed.
"Moscow betrayed Kyiv. And to this day, it continues this very cruel policy: bombing Kyiv, destroying our Golden Gate, raping and killing civilians," the permanent representative emphasized.
Addressing the Russian delegation, he stated that Ukrainians do not need "distorted historical lessons about imaginary unity."
"Kyiv has stood strong for over 1000 years and will stand for another thousand. It will flourish, remain unconquered, and Russia will not succeed in subjugating it," Melnyk declared.
Finally, he quoted in Russian: "Окончен бал, потухли свечи… Бери шинель — иди домой" (The ball is over, the candles are out... Take your greatcoat – go home).
"So take your greatcoats — and get out of Ukraine!" the diplomat added.
