"Rising fuel prices today affect every resident of Lithuania, so the government's response must be swift, concrete, and tangible. We have already decided to release part of the fuel reserve — this was our first step. The Ministry of Finance has also agreed with the European Commission on a temporary reduction in excise duty on diesel fuel. But we are looking for solutions that will allow us to reduce people's daily expenses already now. Therefore, we have decided to halve train ticket prices for two months — April and May," Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė stated on Tuesday.
From April until early summer, passengers will be able to purchase tickets for domestic routes with a 50% discount. According to the Prime Minister, this measure is expected to encourage residents to switch to public transport.
It is expected that around 1.2 million passengers will use trains during these two months. It is anticipated that thanks to the discounts, passenger traffic will increase by another 200,000 people. This decision will cost the Lithuanian budget approximately 1.5 million euros.
