Irish police reported that a man over 40 years old entered the "restricted area of Shannon Airport" in County Clare on the morning of April 11.
Footage on social media shows the man climbing onto a large military transport aircraft and striking its wing.
It was not immediately possible to detain the man: local law enforcement had to bring a mobile air stair and board the plane. During this time, the perpetrator managed to damage the fuselage. Airport operations were halted for 25 minutes.
A police statement said:
"A man aged in his 40s was arrested by Gardaí for alleged criminal damage shortly before 11 am. He is currently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda station in the Clare-Tipperary division."
He can be held for up to 24 hours, excluding breaks. How he managed to access the military aircraft at all is currently unknown.
