Belarus develops medicinal films that can replace pills and injections

Young scientists from Belarusian State University have created a new type of medicine – special films that dissolve in the mouth. They look like thin strips and contain vitamins, herbal supplements or medications, writes sb.by.

The peculiarity of this development is that the active substance enters the body directly through the oral mucosa, bypassing the stomach and liver. Thanks to this, the effect occurs very quickly. The films dissolve in a few seconds and do not require water to swallow.

This format is especially convenient in situations where quick help is needed — for example, for pain, allergies, cough, diarrhea, or motion sickness. It is also suitable for children, the elderly, and those who have difficulty swallowing.

The developers note that these films can become an alternative to conventional pills, syrups, and injections, which are not always convenient or have limitations in use.

Biodegradable materials are used in production, which complies with the principles of green chemistry. The technology is already adapted for industrial production, although there are currently no such productions in Belarus, so the project is considered unique.

Currently, scientists are working on expanding the composition and improving the taste of the films, as some components have a bitter aftertaste. Variants with antiviral, anti-allergic, anti-diarrheal effects have already been created, as well as remedies that help with cough.

The development was carried out by young researchers Tatyana Beznosik and Maria Hunovich together with scientific supervisors Dmitry Grinshpan and Maria Savitskaya. The project has already received high praise at a competition for medical startups, and Belarusian pharmaceutical enterprises have shown interest in it. This gives a chance that such films will be produced and widely used in the future.
