The incident occurred at a market in the Lakki Marwat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, near the Afghan border. According to police, among the dead are two traffic police officers and one woman. It is believed that the security forces were the specific target of the attack.
During the explosion, shops and other nearby facilities were also damaged. Most of the injured were random passers-by.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. However, suspicions often fall on the Pakistani Taliban — the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) group, which has intensified its attacks against security forces in recent years.
Meanwhile, representatives of the Pakistani Taliban have already stated that they are not involved in the explosion.
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif condemned the attack and expressed condolences to the families of the victims. He instructed a swift investigation to be conducted and the perpetrators to be found.
The security situation in the region remains tense after the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan in 2021. Mutual accusations of supporting militants continue between Pakistan and Afghanistan, and clashes periodically occur at the border.
