Lithuanian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the country is discussing the issue of Belarusian potash fertilizers with the USA
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys publicly stated on LRT that Vilnius is in dialogue with Washington regarding the transit of Belarusian potash fertilizers.
Earlier, "Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty" reported that the US State Department had sent a request to Lithuania, Poland, and Ukraine to lift sanctions on Belarusian potash and allow its transit through their territories.
This is related to the decision made in March by the Donald Trump administration to lift restrictions against "Belaruskali" after Alyaksandr Lukashenka's regime released some political prisoners.
Commenting on the information about the US request, Kęstutis Budrys noted: "I can confirm that we are talking about this topic with the USA, this issue is on the agenda, we are taking various opinions into account."
However, the minister emphasized that Lithuania is not going to unilaterally change its position, as the restrictions are established at a pan-European level:
"I draw attention to the fact that sanctions against Belarus and potash fertilizers are in effect until the end of February 2027, and currently there are no ways, means, or reasons to review anything at the EU level. And this is not only Lithuania's position, this is a European position."
Lithuania completely stopped the transit of Belarusian potash from February 1, 2022. Despite the fact that the USA lifted its sanctions this year, Vilnius continues to block supplies, as analogous restrictions were introduced by the European Union after Washington's move.
According to the BNS agency, earlier this month Budrys had already expressed concern about pressure from Washington at a closed meeting of the Social Democratic Party faction.
