German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called on Russian President Vladimir Putin for negotiations on a peaceful settlement in Ukraine – with the participation of the European side, writes Deutsche Welle.
— It's time to sit down at the negotiating table, — said the head of Germany's foreign policy department during a meeting with his Mexican counterpart Roberto Velasco in Mexico City on Thursday, June 4. — I think everyone sees that the conflict has entered a phase that urgently requires resolution.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, amid the stalling of US mediation efforts, addressed Putin with an open letter, proposing direct peace talks between the leaders of the two countries on neutral territory with the participation of several European states.
Wadephul emphasized the importance of Germany's and the European Union's participation in the negotiation process. According to him, the discussion concerns the European continent, possible security guarantees for Ukraine, and the process of its accession to the EU — all these issues, in his opinion, can only be discussed and resolved with the participation of Europeans.
— Therefore, Europeans must be included in these negotiations, — the minister stressed, adding: — In what format and exactly when this will happen, we can decide at any moment.
