Portuguese Man Tried to Smuggle Hashish and Marijuana into Belarus
Brest customs officers detained a 37-year-old citizen of Portugal who attempted to smuggle narcotic substances into Belarus. The man was traveling through the "Brest" checkpoint as a passenger on a scheduled bus, according to the State Customs Committee.
To cross the border, the man chose the green corridor and declared that he had no goods prohibited or restricted for movement across the border.
During customs control, a service dog reacted to the foreigner in the clearance hall. However, even after an additional question from the customs officer, the man again refused to admit the presence of prohibited substances.
During the inspection of his belongings, two opened packs of cigarettes with suspicious contents were found in his backpack and suitcase. Expertise showed that 20 out of 40 checked cigarettes contained hashish, and two others contained marijuana.
Following the incident, the Brest customs initiated a criminal case. Belarusian legislation provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment for up to ten years for such a crime.
For the duration of the investigation, a measure of restraint in the form of detention has been chosen for the detainee.
