The Finnish Parliament has approved a law that lifts the ban on the import, transit, and storage of nuclear weapons on the country's territory, writes Bloomberg.

125 deputies voted in favor of the initiative, while 61 parliamentarians opposed it.

The amendments allow the import, transportation, and storage of nuclear weapons in cases where it is necessary to ensure national defense.

At the same time, the Finnish authorities have stated that they do not plan to deploy nuclear weapons on their territory in peacetime.

Finnish Minister of Defense Antti Häkkänen stated that the adoption of the law strengthens the country's defense capability and ensures the possibility of fully utilizing NATO's nuclear deterrence mechanisms for state defense. The government noted that the decision was made amidst the deteriorating security situation in Europe.
