Restorers discovered unknown changes to a 17th-century painting attributed to Rembrandt. During the study of the work «Let the Children Come to Me», it was revealed that someone later made significant alterations to the original appearance of the painting, The Guardian writes .
In particular, one of the turbans worn on people's heads was repainted into a traditional Dutch hat. Specialists also noticed that the figure of one of the children was partially covered with clothing, although it might have originally been painted nude.
According to experts, these changes were likely made by another artist to make the subject more 'acceptable' to contemporary viewers and to remove elements that could cause controversy.
The painting was found in 2014 at a German auction, where it was initially considered the work of an unknown 17th-century Dutch artist. Now, after examination, it is attributed to Rembrandt and is being prepared for sale at Sotheby's auction with an estimated value of several million pounds sterling.
Researchers note that the original version of the work might have been more diverse and open in terms of depicting people from various social and cultural groups, which corresponded to the ideas of tolerance characteristic of a part of Dutch society at that time.
