Lvovsky: Luhina would be better off living a couple of centuries ago, when it was fashionable to complain about peasants

In the new episode of TOK, BEROC academic director Leu Lvovsky commented on the words of Tatsiana Luhina, general director of "Kamvol", who complained that Belarusians have a poor work ethic and people work little.

According to the economist, such reasoning is reminiscent of landlords' complaints several centuries ago.

“I think some people were born in the wrong era. This lady would have been better off living a couple of centuries ago. Back then, it was fashionable to complain about peasants. It seems you beat them, but they still don't know languages, serve wine poorly, can't cook meringue, are all illiterate, and live in dirt,” Lvovsky ironically remarked when asked to comment on Luhina's words.

The economist emphasized that there are no "bad people" or "bad workers" on the scale of an entire country.

“Every individual person, of course, can be a bad worker, but for an entire nation to be bad – that doesn't happen,” Lvovsky believes.

According to him, problems arise not because of people, but because of poor institutions and inefficient management.

He noted that Belarusians are in no way inferior to the inhabitants of neighboring countries, neither in terms of education nor work ethic.

Lvovsky is confident: “[Belarusians] are no worse than Poles or Lithuanians. I don't think they are significantly worse than Germans, let alone French people.”

There is no reason to talk about any particular laziness of Belarusians.

“Belarusians work hard. And if, at the same time, you cannot organize a system so that they earn as much as in neighboring countries, then you should look in the mirror and blame yourself. But it's always easier to say: ‘Yes, yes, it's all our workers who don't want to work,’ ” the economist concluded.
